know the signs

How do you know if it's time for new skylights?

Our helpful guide explains the signs to know when it’s time to replace your skylights:

Can Allen Roofing install skylights or do I need a skylight company?

With Allen Roofing & Siding, you get both a roofing company AND a professional skylight company. We’ve installed beautiful skylights in homes across the St. Louis metro area (including Illinois) for over 50 years. Choose a company that installs skylights regularly as each manufacturer and model is different. Proper installation is the key to a dry home!

Why do skylights always leak?

Skylights only leak if installed incorrectly. While receiving a faulty skylight from the manufacturer is technically possible, more often than not leaking is a result of installation errors.

If a skylight is installed per the manufacturer’s instructions, it will not leak within the documented component lifespan. If it’s installed poorly, you’ll see leaks each time it rains or snows.

Once a leak in your old skylight is identified, it’s vital to contact Allen Roofing to discuss replacement options quickly before more damage occurs to your home.

How long will a typical skylight last?

A skylight will last between 15 and 20 years before the seals start to fail. Even assuming it’s installed correctly, water will eventually sneak in once the manufacturer seal between the glass and metal has reached its maximum lifespan.

Depending on where you skylight is on your home, it might not be incredibly obvious once a seal has failed. You can always call for a free roof and skylight inspection from Allen Roofing & Siding to confirm.

What are the types of skylight and which is better?

There’s many types and styles of skylights in addition to various sizes. The best skylight will depend on your space, the amount of light you’d like let into the room and your budget.

The most popular types include:

  • Fixed skylights which always stay closed
  • Manual vented skylights
  • Electric vented skylights via remote or wall switch
  • Sun tunnels (also known as solar tubes) skylights
  • Solar-powered vented skylights which use the sun to power the motor

After selecting your style, there are colors and accessories to choose as well. Don’t be dismayed, we can walk you through the entire process.
